Food Sector Articles

With 10.2% of the world population in 2017 in severe food insecurity, and due to the volatility of food prices, food has become a sector of major concern (FAO 2017). Food production is a great producer of waste, for instance in unnecessary packaging, or in unconsumed or spoiled food. Innovation takes a big part in supplying demand for agriculture produce and in maintaining sustainable prices. R2Pi focuses on creative business models that may offer better yields at fair prices. Lentura, a Spanish farmers association, provides directly to consumers thus limiting "food miles". Another great example is ECF Farm Systems' innovative business model, which managed to form a symbiosis of two industries. Reducing waste and developing new feasible recycling methods for products assumed un-recyclable have become key elements for the future of this sector.
